We got a call from a caravan owner at a holiday park in Shelly Beach whose van had lost all power. Here is how we tracked down the fault and got the power back on.
Finding the fault
With caravan power problems the fault can be in one of three places: the park supply pole, the lead, or the van itself. So we tested each one in turn:
- Supply pole: tested OK
- 15 amp lead from the pole to the van: tested OK
- 15 amp inlet on the caravan: faulty, with the pins worn loose

The fix
We replaced the worn inlet with a new 15 amp caravan inlet, then tested the whole setup from the pole through to the van. The owner confirmed the power was back on and the external plug was working again.
Signs your caravan inlet needs checking
- the plug feels loose or falls out of the inlet
- scorch marks, discolouring or a burning smell around the inlet
- power cutting in and out when the lead is bumped
- tripping at the supply pole when you plug in
A loose or damaged inlet can overheat, so it is worth getting it looked at early. Caravan inlets and 240V wiring must be repaired by a licensed electrician.
