This week we installed a home EV charger for a family in Terrigal, so they can now charge their electric car safely in their own driveway instead of relying on a standard power point or public chargers.
What the job involved
Before any EV charger goes in, we check the switchboard and the power supply to the property to make sure it can handle the extra load. With that confirmed and the charger options talked through with the owners, we:
- ran a new dedicated circuit from the switchboard just for the charger
- protected that circuit with its own RCD (safety switch) in the switchboard
- mounted an isolator switch on the wall right beside the charging station, so the charger can be switched off locally for servicing
- ran and fixed the cabling neatly through the garage
- tested everything and certified the work
Why a dedicated circuit matters
An EV draws a lot of current for hours at a time. Charging from an ordinary power point on a shared circuit can overheat wiring and trip breakers. A dedicated, RCD-protected circuit installed by a licensed electrician is the safe way to charge every night, and it means the charger can run at its proper speed.
